WEST PORT PROJECT STEERS FORWARD
PCCA AGM attendees welcomed an informative presentation by Mr Dominic Boyle, Principal Project Director of the proposed multi-billion-dollar Westport development planned for completion by late 2030. The project is to be located at the intersection of an extended Anketell Rd and the Kwinana coast, and is to comprise the new port facilities, Anketell Rd upgrades to Tonkin Highway, and an expanded rail network designed to get more containers off the roads and onto the rail freight network destined for the Kewdale and Forrestfield Intermodal Terminals. Westport says that Cockburn Rd traffic will not be impacted.
The WA State Government has just announced a $273 million investment to progress the project definition to support the design completion, approvals, land acquisition and construction strategies ahead of final decisions and procurement of capital works contracts. Check the Westport pages here http://westport.wa.gov.au/ and You can read the Business Case Summary here.
Some key Westport information:- Shipping freight traffic to be relatively static till 2039, then an additional 7 weekly ship arrivals increasing to 12 weekly by 2051.- A second parallel shipping channel is to be created to accommodate ships around 300 metres in length. The project is investigating new digital buoys for navigation to reduce visual pollution.- New federal legislation and international conventions to regulate the Ballast Water Management Convention, the content of fuel oil used and carried, and what treatments are required to purge biotic life in the hold. - Consideration of invasive species will be assessed as part of the EPA process and a 2026 Public Environmental Review. Check the EPA’s website, under the “Assessment” tab and the Fisheries (Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development) for marine biosecurity including the control and prevention of introduced marine species through biofouling.
